As an athlete or coach, you're not obligated to win. You're obligated to keep trying to do the best you can every day, regardless of what happens at the end of it. The point is, of course, if you do the right things every day to the best of your ability, the chances of you winning are that much higher. I, for one, have a burning desire not to win, but to prove to myself that I am capable of doing so. If my best performance ever does not merit a win, then so be it. If my team all come out of the pool or surf with a smile on their face, then that is all the magic that can be asked for. Ed has been a real base of stone for me and my sporting ambitions. He truly is a ‘rock steady’ platform from which I have pulled information and guidance over the last 18 months. My change of sport from rowing to speed lifesaving has been a real challenge, especially technically, and remains a challenge that I am sure will take me a further 18months to master. Like his son, my former junior double sculls partner, our changes from rowing to lifesaving and triathlon respectively have been monitored with the dedication of a professional. Ed has been there every step of the way, supporting, writing, helping and, more than anything, being a great friend. Although my personal life is yet to allow me to approach this sport with the dedication I want, I know who my first choice will be when that time comes.
