After three seasons of racing during which my training was unorganised, undisciplined and erratic, I finally hit a low spot at BIRC2004. My BIRC time of 6:45.8 was my worst ever result, some 14 seconds down on my personal best which had been achieved during the first few months of my rowing training. Something drastic was needed if I was to continue in this sport. Eddie Fletcher offered to help out, nothing to formal at first, just a few ergo tests and a lot of questions on my background and training. Eddie soon concluded that there was a need to get back to basics, to recapture some of that aerobic capacity I had when I first started, three years ago. A plan emerged, a 4 week program of Low Stroke Rate, Heart Rate restricted training, most sessions lasting 50-60minutes. Within a few weeks there was order back in my training and a regime to follow, results followed quickly as each week the same sessions got easier and quicker. A second test week revealed a huge improvement on the 30minute/20spm test. The first four weeks of base training were followed by a six week program leading up to a 2km race. The sessions got shorter and faster, more long intervals, but still at low stroke rate and restricted heart rates. The final test is getting near now, but already the objective has been met. With Eddies help my fitness level and racing speeds have been completely transformed. Training is exciting and I am already looking past the next test and into the next racing season. With Eddies help I am hoping for much faster times by then. It takes something special to motivate someone to completely change their attitude to training, I never thought it possible to achieve the turn around in fitness that I am currently seeing in such a short time. It seems Eddie has that special talent.
Cheers Eddie
